Call for Artists: Crosswalk Art Installation in Jackson, Tennessee
Jackson Downtown Development Corporation (JDDC) and theCO are seeking a West Tennessee-based artist to design and install crosswalk art at the intersection of Main Street and Church Street in Downtown Jackson, Tennessee.
Once applications are submitted, the Design Committee appointed by JDDC will choose one artist for the project. The artist will work collaboratively with community volunteers to install the temporary artwork during limited time during a temporary street closure in November, 2023. The public will be invited to participate in the installation process. The artwork is expected to last between three to five years before revisiting for maintenance.

The art is expected to last at least three calendar years before needing maintenance. Once the art needs maintenance, JDDC will revisit the installation with the City of Jackson to either cover or repair the work. This installation is intended to be temporary.

Each crosswalk has curved edges. The measurements below are estimates that do not take into account each curved edge:
Main St. - 9 ft x 43 ft and 9 ft x 53 ft
Church St. - 9 ft x 35 ft and 9 ft x 39 ft

A budget is not required. There is $2,500 allocated for supplies for this project that will be spent in full on supplies needed. A budget will be created with the chosen artist and administrative staff overseeing the project.

No, but the artist must include a design concept with their application that meets the goals of the installation.

No, the crosswalk lines will remain. No element of the design shall interfere with markings or structures that already exist in the space.

The design committee will meet to select an artist by the end of August, 2023. The artist will be notified immediately upon their decision.

The road will be closed for 3 days. 2 days will be allocated towards painting, and 1 day will be for drying before the road opens for regular traffic flow.

JDDC, theCO, and the City of Jackson will work together to recruit volunteers to assist in the installation process. The public will be invited to participate in the installation. The artist must be comfortable instructing volunteers to assist in the installation process.
